  8.               Be on the look out for the following 2 computer hackers
  9.          that have recently started a raid of computer bulletin boards
  10.          in the Southern Calif. area.
  11.               Their names are: Steve Shaw and Pat Rajabi.  They also
  12.          go by the following aliases: Jim Brooks, Brian Ohart, John
  13.          Aron, Jarrod Anderson, Sysop zz, Yocon Liber, John Smith,
  14.          Nick Rivers, Marc Williams and Max Sterling.
  15.               They have broken into a large PCBoard in this area and
  16.          have downloaded their membership list and crashed the board.
  17.          They have edited this list down to all sysops that have
  18.          logged onto this PCBoard and have been calling these boards,
  19.          logging on as they sysop and using the sysop's password.  If
  20.          you are a sysop and if you use different passwords you have
  21.          nothing to fear.  But, if you use the same password for
  22.          calling other boards and use it on your own board, you are in
  23.          for some real trouble, especially if your system is a PCBoard
  24.          or a Fido BBS.
  25.               I have called some sysops about this but gave up when I
  26.          learned that they had all ready been hit or knew about the
  27.          breech.  If you operate a BBS-PC system you are relatively
  28.          safe.  They will download your membership directory in search
  29.          of more sysops and that is about all.  For other boards, they
  30.          can be very destructive.
  31.               When they log on to your board using your name and
  32.          password they will quickly assign themselves top level
  33.          security access and log off in hope of not being noticed.
  34.               Then they will log back on using their own name, enter
  35.          your membership records and create the above fictious names
  36.          and give them all sysop status.  If they run out of things to
  37.          do they will try and exit to DOS and attempt a format of your
  38.          discs.
  39.               I have 100 pages of docs on hand showing what they do
  40.          and how they do it (all my boards activities are logged to
  41.          disk) and also they were dumb enough to upload their hit list
  42.          from a PCBoard they raided that contains names of many sysops
  43.          not only in Calif., but also in other states.
  44.               One sysop I talked to knows these criminal's real
  45.          addresses and phone numbers and is contacting the
  46.          authorities.  This sysop talked to Steve Shaw and told me
  47.          that Steve Shaw informed him that they were out to destroy
  48.          "every PCBoard in America."  This threat should not be taken
  49.          lightly.  This guy means exactly what he says.  He has all
  50.          ready proven it in this area.
  51.               If you notice these people's names on your BBS I would
  52.          suggest deleting your entire membership log and starting over
  53.          requiring your members to enter with new passwords that they
  54.          have not used before.
  55.               If you haven't been hit, I would strongly suggest
  56.          changing your password to your board daily or weekly.  These
  57.          hackers are not exceptionally bright and are easy to catch if
  58.          you are aware of how they operate.

  73.          Park at (714) 821-5014.  Don't ask for a copy of their hit
  74.          list because I will not put it out on the boards for security
  75.          reasons to others.  But, if you know of a Pirate BBS, I'm
  76.          sure that this list is on their.  It is an extensive list and
  77.          I'm sure that it has come from one of the very popular
  78.          PCBoards in this area.  I don't know which one, if that is
  79.          what you are asking yourself.
  80.               I am sure that these hackers will have their fun and
  81.          quit but until then: play it safe!
